Proposed Safer Route to School Scheme

Picture of Whitehill Road outside Ellistown Primary School

Background

In early 2007, Ellistown Community Primary School adopted a School Travel Plan (STP), which identified how students travelled to school and identified possible opportunities to enable travel by more sustainable means, e.g. walking and cycling.  The STP identified the need for a school 20mph zone to reduce vehicle speeds around the school entrance.
The County Council has also been petitioned to provide a pedestrian crossing on Whitehill Road.
The concerns from the school and the petitioners have been taken into account in the development of proposals, which are aimed at controlling vehicle speeds and improving pedestrian safety.  The proposals complement the scheme recently installed at the former Ellistown Crossroads which has already improved pedestrian facilities in the area.

The Proposals

A scheme is now proposed on Whitehill Road which is aimed at controlling vehicle speed and improving pedestrian safety, and consists of:
  • A speed table where the School Crossing Patrol currently operates to reduce the speed of traffic outside the school.
  • An advisory school 20mph zone which consists of yellow backed signs with flashing amber lights operational at school times.
  • A Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) at the southern end of Whitehill Road to re-emphasise the 30mph to vehicles travelling from Bagworth.

The use of this plan is limited to viewing on-line and printing one copy only.  For photos and details of the traffic measures we are proposing in your area, please click on our link to the photo gallery and follow the link for gallery part 5.

Scheme Objectives

  • To reduce the speed of vehicles travelling on Whitehill Road to create a safer environment for all road users, but particularly for local residents.
  • To make the area around the entrance to the primary school safer to encourage more people to walk to school

What happens next?

Public consultations have been carried out and comments received are now being collated.  The success of these proposals is dependent on the support of the local community and comments received help elected members to decide how the scheme should progress. The final outcome of the consultations will be posted on the website.
