Appendix L: Our definition of a residential road (street) or road in a mixed use residential / local facilities area

Our definition of a residential road (street) or road in a mixed residential / local facilities area is one that:
  • is lightly trafficked (the Manual for Streets implies that a flow of 2000 vehicles per day or less is a reasonable threshold);
  • has an HGV flow less than 100 per day (or no more than 5% of all traffic);
  • has a speed limit of 30 mph or less and with measured speed of traffic generally below 30 mph;
  • is mainly built up on both sides with residential or a mix of residential and local facilities, shops and so on;
  • is not be part of a designated lorry route, wide-load route, high-load route; and
  • has a gradient no steeper than 1 in 10 (10%). (Note: On steeper sites, visibility splay standards will normally need to be increased accordingly.)
In addition the proposed characteristics for a new junction should not be out of character with the rest of the street.
