About Us

Working together

We work alongside students, school staff, bus companies and parents to help create and maintain a safe and trouble free environment with regards to the operation of your school transport.
We deal with all issues that may arise from and during school transport.  This encompasses such issues as anti-social behaviour and bullying, checking of bus passes and the promotion and enforcement of safe travel.

Education

The main role of Safer Travel is to educate pupils in how they are expected to behave on the school bus and how they can play an active role in taking responsibility for the safety of themselves and their fellow pupils.  We also liaise with drivers about any problems they may have and offer short talks about the best way to deal with difficult situations and unruly pupil behaviour.
The Safer Travel team visit schools all over Leicestershire to give assemblies that are tailored to different ages on the importance of safe and responsible bus travel and we also hold classroom sessions at Primary schools.  The message that we deliver aims to highlight the dangers of misbehaving onboard the bus and to promote empathy for the driver and the difficult job that they have to do.
A few of the key points:
  • Causing distractions and making too much noise means drivers cannot concentrate on the road.
  • Wait sensibly at the bus stop and stay away from the road.
  • Always carry a bus pass and show it to the driver.
  • Stay in your seat at all times when the bus is moving and wear a seatbelt if one is provided.
  • Always be aware of traffic when getting off the bus.
  • Wait until the bus has driven away before crossing the road.
Future plans include visiting as many schools as possible and reaching out to more of the drivers and contractors that experience challenging pupil behaviour.
