![]() Footpaths – why dispose of uneven, reinstated asphalt to replace it with expensive new material, when you can recycle the existing, saving disposal costs, whilst reducing the use of non renewable resources and avoiding the aggregate tax.
Leicestershire Highways persuaded and worked with local firm Mineral Recycling Co Ltd to develop an asphalt recycler.
Existing asphalt is excavated and placed in the drum of the asphalt recycler. A small amount of new bitumen is added to replace that lost by oxidisation and is then heated as the drum rotates producing well mixed workable material.
This is then laid and rolled as a base course then a wearing course of new material is laid on top for cosmetic reasons.
