Advanced Design

The Engineering Design Group can provide specialist transportation related services that can range from the design of a simple priority junction to complex network analysis. Our technical input at an early stage for mixed developments or ‘greenfield’ sites will ensure that the best over-arching solutions are found for all modes of travel. The Group delivers many aspects of the County Councils’ transportation programme. Work is also undertaken for external clients. All aspects of the work are to the highest quality and carried out in accordance with our Quality Assured (ISO 9001:2008) procedures.

Our services include

  • Detailed geometric design of all types of junctions from feasibility to detailed design of roundabouts, priority junctions and signallised junctions. Our experience includes designing a wide range of access layouts for proposed developments and park & ride sites.
  • Transport Assessments (TA) – we have a wide range of experience in this field. We have produced transport assessments for external clients that identify what measures may be required to deal with the predicted transport impacts.
  • Bus priority schemes – all recent in-house schemes have been designed by this team. The work included traffic analysis, bus lane designs, junction designs and bus priority measures through junctions.
  • Auditing/checking transport assessments – the in-house development control team commissions us to check all highway issues for TA’s submitted by external consultants.
  • Junction calculations – we also undertake calculations using unique spreadsheets, lane flow diagrams and software packages like LINSIG, ARCADY and PICADY.
  • Junction design checks – our role also includes checking all submitted junction designs for proposed developments.
  • Accident analysis – we can undertake full accident analysis for junctions or road sections and recommend improvement measures.

Examples of our recent commissions

Enderby Park & Ride
Feasibility Work
Land off Middlefield Lane Depot, Hinckley The transport assessment was prepared on behalf of Hinckey & Bosworth Borough Council in support of its outline planning application. The application was for light industrial units and a full traffic analysis was carried out to demonstrate that the proposed development could be accommodated with no significant detrimental effects on the operation or safety of the adjacent highway network.
This commission was to examine all the technical issues related to the site access arrangements and bus priority issues through the key junctions in the area.
This included establishing peak period traffic conditions, deriving opening year traffic flows and identifying the most appropriate site junctions.
Enderby Park and Ride Plan
A50 Bus Priority Proposals
Feasibility Work
This commission was to examine site arrangements for a future Glenfield Park & Ride, recommend proposals for inbound and outbound bus lanes along the A50 corridor and propose improvements at the A46/A50 roundabout to reduce delays and congestion. A feasibility report was produced for submission to the DfT for funding approval. A50 bus priority plan
