Business as usual at Whetstone recycling and waste site
It's back to business as usual at a recycling centre in Leicestershire.
The County Council's Whetstone recycling and household waste site is back in full swing after work to demolish a former incinerator building was completed.
The incinerator at Whetstone closed around 20 years ago. The building had since been used as part of the waste management operations at the site, but was no longer required.
It was decided to demolish the old building and improve the site. Demolition work started earlier this summer - and is now complete on time.
A 50 tonne high reach excavator, with a 30 metre arm, was used to gradually break up the building which consisted mainly of concrete and reinforcement steel. A new model of water cannon was also employed for dust suppression.
98% of the demolished material is being recycled, and is likely to be used in construction projects in the local area.
Rashik Lad, Team Manager, said: "Whetstone is one of 14 County Council sites where residents can take a range of items to recycle, including electrical goods, scrap metal, clothes and garden waste, as well as household rubbish.
“Every year, it handles more than 60,000 tonnes of material and approximatley 60% of this is recycled or re-used.”
