Washing at Home

Baby in Real Nappy

Caring for Real Nappies and reducing their environmental impact

  • Real Nappies are very convenient; they can be washed in your washing machine at 60oC with non-bio powder. There is no need to boil wash.
  • Wraps can be washed at 40oC
  • Using A-rated appliances can reduce energy and water consumption.
  • You do not necessarily need to wash the nappies every day. Every two or three days is enough. They can be stored in a nappy bucket until there is enough nappies for a full wash load.
  • Minimise tumble-drying. Nappy life is prolonged if you line dry them and its better for our environment.
  • Flushable nappy liners can be purchased; this makes using Real Nappies even easier.
  • Use half the amount of soap powder as you would use with your normal clothes. Your nappies will still be as clean.
  • Don’t use fabric conditioners, these make the nappies less absorbent
  • Should any stains appear on your nappies, just hang them out on your washing line in the sunshine and the sun should gently bleach those stains away.
  • Use Real Nappies for more than one child
  • Don’t iron Real Nappies
