Below are details of each of the 5 composters and food waste digesters that we can offer to Leicestershire residents:
![]() The Green Cone food waste digester comes in 2 main parts:
1. The green cone which is visable above ground and allows you access to the unit.
2. A basket which houses the food waste and is buried underground
The Green Cone also comes complete with kitchen caddy, accelerator powder and shaker.
What can go in? The Green Cone is a great way of reducing your kitchen waste as it can digest all types of kitchen waste, including fruit and vegetable scraps, raw and cooked meat or fish, bones, dairy products and other organic kitchen waste e.g. tea bags, bread etc. You cannot use the Green Cone for any garden waste.
How does it work?
The Green Cone uses a double skinned cone above ground to trap the suns warmth which encourages the growth of beneficial micro-organisms to aid the aerobic digestion process. The food waste in the basket is converted into water, carbon dioxide nutrients and a small amount of residue that will only need to be removed every few years in a well operating Green Cone. The water, carbon dioxide and nutrients will then pass through the basket and into the surrounding soil
In a heathly Green Cone you will see a blue/grey fur on the food waste, this is the bacteria doing its work. While you can see the bacteria you do not need to add accelerator powder. When the level of bacteria starts to disappear add some accelerator powder.
Installation?
The purchase price includes delivery and free professional installation. A suitable sunny, well drained location within the garden will be required for the Green Cone unit. A free of charge installation service is provided as a hole 42cm deep - 60cm wide is required to be dug.
Please note an external access to the installation area must be available i.e. a rear or side access/gateway must be available for the contractor to use. Installation of Green Cones will not be possible if access to the installation area is only available through the purchasers’ house.

![]() The Green Johanna food waste digester/composter comes complete with stirring stick, instruction manual and fixing kit.
What can go in?
The Green Johanna is a 'hot' composter so it can compost both garden and kitchen waste. To get the best compost from your Green Johanna you should add two parts cooked or uncooked food waste (including meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit) to one part garden waste. The system will take approximately 6 months to start producing compost after which it can produce a rich compost all year round.
How does it work?
The Green Johanna is a fully enclosed hot composting system which uses the suns energy to aid the composting process. A complex ventalation system allows the heat to be circulated to help regulate the temperature throughout the bin and during the different seasons. The Green Johanna is a fully sealed unit including a base plate which will prevent unwanted pests getting in to the bin whilst still allowing air circulation and helpful creatures such as worms to get in.
Installation?
1. The Green Johanna requires being in a shady part of your garden (not direct sunlight).
2. The Green Johanna is required to be on a flat area of your garden (preferably on grass). 3. The doors to your Green Johanna are required to be screwed down at all times when access is not required. To purchase your Green Johanna please contact either our dedicated order line 0800 019 2061

The Wormery can digest kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetables peelings and a small amount of paper and cardboard. The wormery takes time to establish and will start to work at its best once the worms are settled and breeding after a year.
Note: You can add small amounts of other kitchen wastes such as meat, fish, cooked leftovers, dairy products and bread, however this would require you to purchase specialist worms which are not included in the standard pack.
How does it work?
The wormery comes in a number of sections which, when stacked on top of each other create a number of layers through which the food waste will pass. The food waste will be first placed in the top layer where it will start to be digested, as this happens the waste will move down the layers until the finished soil improver is ready for removal this is often referred to as "worm casts". The womery will not produce the large volumes of soil improver that a compost bin will produce, however it will produce a valuable liquid fertilizer which can be drained off using the tap at the base of the wormery and then used in the garden after it has been diluted (1 part to 10 parts water).
REMEMBER to drain the liquid off at regular intervals or your worms could drown!
Installation?
Your wormery pack includes a number of sections which, when assembled, will form the wormery, an instruction leaflet, a voucher for your worms, a bedding block, 2Kg lime mix, 2Kg worm treat and a moisture mat.
You will need to site you womery in a shady location as worms cannot survive in high temperatures and work best when they are cool, and ideally the wormery should be situated on a flat area (grass or paved).
You need to return the voucher to the stated address and your free worms will be sent to you through the post. Your voucher entitles you to 500g (approx. 1000 worms) of standard compost worms which will be ideal for starting your wormery. Once your wormery is established after approximately one year you will have between 15,000 and 20,000 worms!
When you first add your worms you will need to provide them with a layer of bedding. The bedding can be made up from any of the following: Leaf mould, finished compost, shredded newspaper or cardboard, well rotted sawdust. Remember if you use newspaper or cardboard to make sure that it is damp as the worms will die if they dry out.
Finally after a couple of days once the worms have settled in you can start to add small amounts of food waste.

The Bokashi bins will digest all kitchen wastes including fruit and vegetable scraps, raw and cooked meat or fish, dairy products and other organic kitchen waste e.g. bread etc. You cannot use the Bokashi bin for any garden waste or bones.
Your Bokashi bin comes complete with a bag of Bran additive, however this is an ongoing requirement for the system to work effectively. You will need to purchase this (approx £40 per year).
How does it work?
The Bokashi bins work using a fermentation process. The system is designed to work in pairs with one bin inside the other, you place your kitchen waste in to the top bin, compact it to remove any excess air and then add some of the Bokashi mix (a mixture of Bran and micro-organisms) this should be repeated until the bin is full. Once the first pair of bins is full you should start to use the second pair of Bokashi bins. The fermentation process will take approx. 2 weeks after which you will have a liquid collected in the bottom bin which can be diluted and used as a fertilizer for your plants. The remaining contents can then either be buried in the garden where they will finish breaking down or added to your compost heap.
Installation?
Your Bokashi bin needs to be kept inside either in your kitchen or another warm area, however it must not be on or near food preparation areas. The Bokashi system is designed so that it does not create any unpleasent smells.

![]() What can go in?
What can go in? The Komp 250 compost bin is a standard compost bin and can break down garden waste such as grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, twigs, paper, cardboard, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags etc. You cannot add the following to your compost bin: cooked vegetables, meat, dairy products, diseased plants, and definitely no dog faeces, cat litter, or babies nappies. If you add these to your compost bin you could encourage unwanted pests and also create odour.
How does it work?
The Komp 250 is a standard compost bin and works using the process of aerobic digestion. To help ensure you get the best from your bin you need to add the right ingredients!
“Greens” such as vegetable peelings, grass cuttings and tea bags which will rot quickly and provide important nitrogen and moisture.
“Browns” such as cardboard, paper and fallen leaves which will rot more slowly and provide fibre, carbon and important air pockets.
These “Green” and “Brown” ingredients should be added in equal portions and mixed together. If your compost is too wet, try adding more Browns, and if too dry, add some Greens. To help provide air pockets try adding some shredded paper or scrunched up card or aerate your compost by using a fork or other tools to create holes through the compost layers. This will facilitate the movement of air and helpful creatures such as worms.
Installation?
Your Komp 250 needs to be located in a sunny/partly shaded part of your garden and if possible on a flat area of grass or soil, this will help creatures such as worms to gain access quicker and begin the composting process.
