The Big Switch Off

With rising energy prices, saving energy is one of the easiest ways to reduce costs in school. It also helps to tackle climate change, by reducing your schools carbon emissions.

Reducing your energy bill can be done cheaply without necessarily investing in expensive technologies or making major alterations.  Take a walk around your school and see how energy is being used and spot where savings can be made.  Engage with staff and pupils and raise awareness of what you are doing and why.

Simple good energy housekeeping throughout the school can have a real affect. In 2008 Latimer Primary School, in Anstey, enthusiastically took part in the campaign and energy detectives; recording a 69% drop in their energy use, compared with the previous week!

This year not only can you support the campaign, but you can join in with your own Energy Detectives and download lots of information and resources from the new Teachers Pack, and for primary schools there is also a Super Hero Design Competition!
