The Big Switch Off 2009 Competitions

As part of The Big Switch Off 2009, a number of competitions took place to encourage residents, schools, colleges, community and faith groups to take part in the energy saving campaign.

Schools were asked design certificates for schools, businesses and organisations taking part in the Big Switch Off 2009. There were three age categories whose winning designs would be used for specific groups:-

The winning pupils were:- KS1 - Jack Harvey, aged 7 from Ryhall Primary School, Rutland; KS2 - Millie Walker, aged 10 from Oakham Primary School, Rutland; KS3 - Amy Fairbrother, aged 11 from King Edward VII School, Melton Mowbrary, Leicestershire.

There was also an Energy Dectectives Competition to find out which school saved the most energy during Big Switch Off week compared to the week before and a schools page on this website to support schools.

Students were invited to take part in a short-film making competition to get people thinking about energy saving. The two winning entries were awarded to:

Upper School:- “You wouldn’t…” from Ashby School by Jade Bakewell, Lewis Smith, Jake Bowley, Jordan Barry and Thomas Smith

College: - Dean Pell from Stephenson College

Highly commended was awarded to Derek Cooper and Lucy McDowell from Stephenson College

The Family Challenge set local families the task of saving 20 percent on their energy bills over a year starting from 5th October 2009 with the chance to win a family ticket to Snibston Discovery Park for whoever saved the most energy during October with whoever saving the most by October 2010 getting a green goodie hamper! Families were sent an OWL energy monitor and an energy diary to help monitor how energy is being used in their house. 16 families are taking part in the challenge and we'll be adding info on how they are getting on as we get it.

5 community groups are taking part in an energy saving competition and like the families also have OWL energy monitors to monitor energy use in their buildings fpr the chance to win a free professional Display Energy Certificate. For information, download the brief.
