Tilton Green grew out of the Tilton and Halstead Parish Plan which recognised many villagers were concerned about the environment and climate change and wanted to make a difference. The group has achieved a lot since it began in June 2008 through a number of activities including:-
  • Screening of the film An Inconvenient Truth
  • Tilton Green Fair attended by over 300 people with stall holders giving advice on energy efficiency, renewable energy, composting and recycling
  • Community recycling scheme for waste electrical items, batteries, aluminium foil, hard plastics such as toys and furniture, tapes and CD’s, tetrapak cartons and inkjet and toner cartridges
  • Helping the local school, Tugby Primary become an Eco School
  • £3000 grant from ENABLE for printing newsletter, cloth bags, and £50 grants to householders for energy improvements such as insulation or energy saving light bulbs.
  • Lent OWL Energy Monitors to householders – The Bird family now reckons they can save up to 35% energy at home after borrowing a monitor and filling out an energy observation diary
  • Installed Eco flow device at Bird Family house to save on LPG consumption (awaiting results)
  • Bi monthly newsletter to householders – Tilton Green News
  • Energy efficient lightbulb library lent to 30 households
  • Chair has given a number of presentations at County events about her experiences of running a Climate Friendly Communities programme
  • Tilton Village Hall has had an energy efficiency survey and a thermal imaging survey to show heat loss to find out how energy efficiency can be improved.
  • They have received a grant from Government Office East Midlands to develop an resources pack for schools and parish councils on climate change
  • Running a village wide competition with a prize for the household saving the most energy over a year
  • Cloth bags are being given out in local shops instead of carrier bags
  • Signed the Leicestershire Together Declaration on Climate Change
  • Won the Best Village in Leicestershire and Best Sustainable Village in the Midlands categories in the Calor Best Village competition
  • Has been selected as one of six ‘Green Communities’ in the East Midlands and will be getting further help from the Energy Saving Trust to become even greener
Future plans includes working with local businesses and focussing on water efficiency and the Tilton Green Fingers group helping people grow their own vegetables, swap plants and share gardens
