Project Gargoyle Training Day - Saturday 6th April 2013 - Free!

A morning session 9.45am-12.30pm will be a talk on the project and on medieval carvings, and the afternoon session (places limited) will run from 1.30pm-3.30pm and will be a technical workshop on photography. Saturday 21st January 2012: Heritage Lottery Fund grants for community projects - Free!

A talk by Lesley Owen-Jones, Development Manager for Heritage Lottery Fund East Midlands. This session will include a presentation on securing community funding, followed by a questions-and-ideas session for Wardens and Heritage Groups who are looking for grant funding for local projects.

Monday 31st October: History, wildlife and rambling walks - events and leaflets - Free!

Walks are a great way to get people actively engaging with history, wildlife and the countryside.  This session looks at encouraging people to walk more through organised activities and published walks. The workshop will encourage participants to share their experience and look at good practice on issues like publicity, insurance, safety, handling larger numbers and the different character of walks run for different purposes. Led by officers from the County Council's Travel Choice and Access Team.

Monday 3rd October: Historic maps and current Rights of Way - Free!  - FULLY BOOKED!

This session looks at how public paths were literally 'put on the map' and how historic maps and archives still underpin cases today. As well as covering the background to the Definitive Map of Rights of Way, the talk will look at the use of Enclosure Acts, Tithe Maps, estate plans, highway records etc. as evidence where there are 'claims' for unrecorded routes to be added to the Definitive Map and how volunteers can help with this. Led by officers from the County Council's Travel Choice and Access Team.

Monday 19th September: Rights of Way: an introduction for all Wardens - Free!

Part of a four-session course that continues into October. This session covers background information about public footpaths, bridleways and byways relevant for all wardens. As well as good practice on using public paths as routes to explore heritage locations, it will look at how Rights of Way came into existence, how they are publicly recorded, and an outline of what to do when encountering problems with paths. There will be ample opportunity for questions. Led by officers from the County Council's Travel Choice and Access Team.

Saturday 24th September: Village Voices - Accent and Dialect - Free!

An introduction to local accents and dialects and how to study them. The day will include all you need to know about the new Village Voices project and how to get involved, including introductions to oral history techniques and other research methods including word lists and questionnaires. There will be a practical 'have-a-go' session and the day will provide you with the tools to start finding out about accent and dialect in your area and beyond. Saturday 24th September: Fieldwalking Training – Free!

A day at Jewry Wall aimed at those who want to take an active part in finding Leicestershire and Rutland’s archaeology. This will explain how to identify archaeological material and undertake surveys.

Saturday 20th August: Open meeting for Wardens at Holly Hayes

Informal meeting at 10.30am-12pm with refreshments (free). The purpose of the meeting is to work towards updating the Wardens Guidance Pack for new and future wardens. The old packs will be examined, and we welcome articles on your experience as wardens for inclusion in the new pack. We will have some of the Community Heritage Initiative displays up, and you are free to picnic in the garden, or drop in at your convenience up until around 4pm.

Tuesday 9th August: How to Find an Historical Event in the Landscape—in 10 Easy Steps! – Free!

Using his experience with the Bosworth Battlefield Survey, Richard Knox, the Keeper of Donington and Bosworth, will be exploring how to go about finding the lost site of an event in the countryside, be it a Wars of the Roses battle or a visit by the local touring circus. He will show how using a wide range of techniques from across the academic and landscape disciplines can go some way to achieving this aim.

Saturday 25th June: Flint Identification & Knapping Day - Free!

10am-3pm
This session is being run by Museums, please take note of booking instructions below.
Join local flint expert, Brian Burningham, as he gives an illustrated lecture on how to identify flints and other man-made lithic material.  This will be followed by an opportunity to put what you have learnt into practice with a hands-on sorting activity. The afternoon will close with a demonstration of flint knapping by local experimental archaeologist, Bob Wells. Light lunch and refreshments provided.
