Exhibition of the War Memorials Project at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre. It is free to enter the temporary exhibition room (next to the shop) and view this set of banners all about the work of the Project. Also featuring examples of damaged and 'orphaned' war memorials kindly lent to us specifically for this exhibition. Don't miss out! The Centre is open each day during the month from 10am to 4pm. There is the Battle museum, Tithe Barn restaurant, new heritage trail and sundial, and Country Park. For more information on visiting the site, go to the Bosworth Battlefield website.

Upcoming event at Donington le Heath Manor House: On Sunday 6th November, 11am-4pm, come and explore life on the battle front and the Home Front during World War One, with Leicestershire Regiment and Royal Naval re-enactors, songs and poems and children’s crafts. Friday 11th November 2011
At 7.30pm on Friday 11th Novemeber, there will be an hour or so of Song, Story and Music at Rothley Parish Church, led by the Choir under the direction of Simon Murphy.

Notification of Swepstone's Remembrance Day service. Sunday 13th November 2011 at 10.30am, St Peter's Church.

Notification of Ashby Woulds and Albert Village services:
At 11am on Sunday 13th November 2011, Members of Ashby Woulds Town Council will conduct an Act of Remembrance at the Bath Lane War Memorial on behalf of residents of Moira, Norris Hill and Boothorpe.
At the same time an Act of Remembrance will take place at the Albert Village Memorial Clock on behalf of Albert Village and Spring Cottage residents.
Both Acts of Remembrance last a few minutes with wreaths being laid by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
You are invited to attend and to join the Mayor, Tony Allan for tea/coffee afterwards at Conkers (Waterside).
Notification of Burbage Remembrance Day service:
Sunday 13th November 10.45am at Burbage War Memorial, Church Street. Full order of service leaflet is available here (pdf file 1Mb).

Notification of Shepshed Remembrance Day Parade and Service
You are invited to assemble from 2.45 p.m. outside the Council Office/Community Centre, Charnwood Road where the procession will leave at 3.00 p.m. prompt. The procession will then parade down Charnwood Road along Field Street to Glenmore Park for a 3.15 p.m. Service (on the hardstanding tarmac area).
Refreshments will be served in the Community Centre on Charnwood Road following the Service – everyone is welcome to attend.

On Wednesday 22nd June 2011 over 100 people joined us to celebrate the activities of the War Memorials Project over the past 18 months, and to thank everyone who has volunteered their time and knowledge to the project. Volunteers across the counties have contributed a wealth of information on local memorials and casualties that is now accessible online.
Exhibitions up at County Hall included local researchers, the War Memorials Trust, Western Front Association, National Memorial Arboretum and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

On display for the evening: Miniature medal set to Lt Colonel R.K. Knox, who was a Royal Irish Rifles Officer serving on the Western Front in WW1 and an Intelligence officer working on the liberation of the Italian Islands in WW2 and liasing with the Free French in Lebanon and Syria.

A collection of WW1 items: A ‘cuff rank’ tunic to a Captain of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, a steel helmet and a late war other ranks service cap to the Royal Irish Rifles, An 1915 English-Flemish phrasebook and an Active Service New Testament along with medals and ribbons from that conflict. Behind them is a group of RAMC officers and men from before the First World War.

A field surgical kit from a private collection, once belonging to Captain Robert Davies Moyle MC of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was awarded the military cross in 1918.

Chairman of the County Council, Jackie Dickinson, meets Michael Doyle, author of Their Name Liveth For Evermore: the Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.

Chairman of the County Council, Jackie Dickinson, welcomes everyone to the event. and Leader of the County Council, David Parsons, gives an introduction to the evening and the work of the War Memorials Project.

Historic & Natural Environment Team Leader, Graham Walley, introduces the speakers, and War Memorials Project Coordinator Liz Blood gives the first of the evening's presentations.
The programme
- 7.00pm Welcome by Jackie Dickinson, Chairman of the County Council, and Introduction by David Parsons, Leader of the County Council
- 7.10pm The Leicestershire and Rutland War Memorials Project - Elizabeth Blood, War Memorials Project Officer: The story of the War Memorials Project so far, and its next phase. Includes a look at the new website and its features and demonstrates the value of community-based research to the appreciation of our war memorial heritage and local casualties.
- 7.30pm The Western Front Association - Tim Chamberlin, Chairman of East Midlands WFA: The work of the Western Front Association and its branches in promoting the need to explore, learn and share experience and knowledge of the First World War.
- 7.45pm War Memorials Trust - Nancy Treves, War Memorials Trust Officer: An introduction to War Memorials Trust, the national charity that works to protect and conserve war memorials in the UK. With examples of war memorials helped in Leicestershire.
- 8.10pm Refreshments
- 8.30pm National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas - Roger Hailwood, NMA Guide and Education Leader: The NMA is home to over 150 memorials, and includes the magnificent National Armed Forces Memorial. Roger Hailwood will look at links with Leicestershire and our recent casualties.
- 9.10pm ‘Orphan’ War Memorials in the County and City - Denis Kenyon and Chris Stephens: Asks whether there would be interest and support in principle for the concept of trying to find a suitable ‘sanctuary’ to display at-risk war memorials along with details of their historical background and previous location.
