Welcome to Leicestershire and Rutland RIGS (Regionally Important Geological Sites)

Leicestershire and Rutland have some of the oldest and youngest rocks in the UK. Our geological history has created the hilly country of Charnwood Forest, the broad valleys of mid-Leicestershire and the rolling countryside in the north and east of the two counties.
This website lets you find out more about our geology through a database or through maps, by individual geological sites or by following themes. You can also find out where the most scientifically important sites are – the 'RIGS'.
Please let us know what you think of this geological website and give us any ideas you may have for improving it.
This website has been produced by the Leicestershire County Council on behalf of the Leicestershire and Rutland RIGS Group with the support of  the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund administered by English Nature.
The RIGS Group is a sub-committee of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildllife Trust which promotes conservation of wildlife and geology locally.
