Leicestershire and Rutland Fishes

This list of Leicestershire and Rutland fishes, complied by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, includes notes on the distribution of native and introduced species in Leciestershire and Rutland.
River Lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis
Rare, migratory to Gwash only.
Brook Lamprey Lampetra planeri
Rare, fast-flowing streams.
Common Sturgeon Acipenser sturio
Rare vagrant to the lower River Soar and River Trent in the nineteenth century.
Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar
Extinct; occurred in the lower Soar in the nineteenth century and spawned on the Trent at King’s Mills. Now re-introduced to the Trent.
Brown Trout Salmo trutta
Native in fast-flowing streams in Charnwood Forest, introduced in lakes and streams elsewhere.
Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss
Introduced, lakes, also Sence and Gwash rivers.
Grayling Thymallus thymallus
Uncommon, Gwash and Welland, formerly occurred in the Soar near its confluence with the Trent.
Pike Esox lucius
Common, slow-moving rivers, canals and lakes.
Common Carp Cyprinus carpio
Introduced, common in lakes, scattered records in large rivers.
Crucian Carp Carassius carassius
Introduced, common in lakes, uncommon in rivers Soar and Welland.
Goldfish Carassius auratus
Introduced, common in ornamental ponds.
Barbel Barbus barbus
Uncommon, Soar only.
Gudgeon Gobio gobio
Common, rivers.
Tench Tinca tinca
Fairly frequent in large rivers; uncommon, lakes.
Silver Bream Blicca bjoerkna
Status uncertain, probably not present in Leicestershire and Rutland.
Common Bream Abramis brama
Scattered in large rivers.
Bleak Alburnus alburnus
Uncommon, rivers Soar and Avon.
Minnow Phoxinus phoxinus
Common, rivers and streams.
Rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus
Uncommon, scattered.
Roach Rutilus rutilus
Common.
Chub Leuciscus cephalus
Common, rivers.
Dace Leuciscus leuciscus
Common, rivers and streams.
Spined Loach Cobitis taenia
Uncommon, Sence, Mease, upper Soar, Rutland Water, streams and canals.
Stone Loach Noemacheilus barbatulus
Common, rivers and streams.
European Eel Anguilla anguilla
Common, rivers, canals and lakes; restricted to the counties’ borders, not in the centre.
Three-spined Stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus
Common, slow-moving streams and rivers and still waters.
Nine-spined Stickleback Pungitius pungitius
Uncommon, mainly Soar.
Burbot Lota lota
Extinct, occurred in the Trent and the Soar below Loughborough in the nineteenth century.
Perch Perca fluviatilis
Common, rivers, canals and lakes.
Ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua
Uncommon, widely scattered, rivers and streams.
Pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca
Introduced, increasing, especially Ashby Canal.
Bullhead Cottus gobio
Common in large and small rivers.
Grass Carp Ctenopharygodon idella
Introduced to at least two sites.
Wels Catfish Silurus glanis
Introduced to at least one site.
