Sustainable Schools

In 2006, the Department for Children, Schools and Families launched their Sustainable Schools Framework to implement central government’s Sustainable Development Strategy with the aim for every school to be sustainable by 2020.
Sustainable Schools focuses on ‘eight doorways of sustainability’ which are:-
Food and Drink
Energy and Water
Travel and Traffic
Purchasing and Waste
Buildings and Grounds
Inclusion and Participation
Local well being
Global dimension
It aims to integrate the above into all areas of school life – the three ‘Cs’ – curriculum, campus and community.

How can Sustainable Schools help my school?

Schools can also gain extra points on their Ofsted Inspection by addressing the Sustainable Schools agenda. Currently this is a self assessment process using the S3 Toolkit. There are plans in the future for Sustainable Schools to be a mandatory part of Ofsted inspections.
A recent study carried out by the Department for Children, Families and Schoos (DCSF) showed that Eco Schools can help schools to implement the Sustainable Schools framework. See Sustainable Schools: How national recognition schemes can support your schools programme
Find out more about Sustainable Schools by watching this short video or show in meetings to persuade other teachers to come on board. Order an A1 Poster showing the 8 Doorways of Sustainability
See the East Midlands Sustainable Schools website to find out what support is available in your area.
