Waste
Waste sent to landfill can cause pollution of the land, air and water.
Problems associated with landfill are:-
Methane gas – biodegradable waste rotting in a landfill site, gives off methane
gas. This is highly explosive and contributes to climate change – it is a greenhouse gas more potent
than carbon dioxide.
A toxic liquid called leachate can sometimes leak into the groundwater causing pollution
of the surrounding land and water courses
Loss of raw materials and energy - products made from raw materials require a huge
amount of energy to make and transport them to shops and other outlets.
Reducing the amount of waste we produce in the first place and recycling and composting
more waste all helps to overcome these problems.
Schools can save money on their waste bills by recycling and composting more and
can even raise money by selling waste to recycling merchants.
Advice
Leicestershire County Council runs the Waste Education Certificate to help schools achieve the waste section of the Eco School status. Schools will be shown how to reduce their waste and be allowed to gain recognition for their efforts.
