Transport

Our increase in car use has contributed to poorer air quality and climate change. Cars help cause air pollution as they release gases such as sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxides and ozone in the exhaust fumes. These poison the air and can make illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and heart conditions worse.
The exhaust fumes also contribute to climate change as they release carbon dioxide as well.
Getting children to travel to school by walking, cycling or using a scooter is also healthier than travelling by car as it is a form of exercise. Travelling to school in this way also helps to reduce the problems of air pollution and climate change.
Advice
Leicestershire County Council runs a School Travel Plan programme to help encourage pupils and staff to rely less on the car for their journey to school and walk, cycle, use public transport or car share.
