Eco Schools

School Grounds

School grounds provide a range of opportunities for informal learning.
They can be used for investigating wildlife and nature and also can be turned into allotments to help children learn how to grow their own fruit and vegetables and teach them about healthy eating. Some schools sell produce to raise funds for their eco club and others cook their home grown vegetables in the canteen.
School grounds can be used as outdoor classrooms as long as there is seating, shade and shelter. They also provide quiet areas where children can relax at break time or can have active play areas in Primary Schools.
Links can be made into the national curriculum for maths, English and science.
Advice
Leicestershire County Council can offer advice on developing school grounds.
