Activities in the Park

A Ruddy Darter fly is one to watch out for a nature trail
  • All of the Country Park is managed with wildlife in mind.
  • Guided Walks are organised around the park looking at its natural history and development.
  • Conservation Days are also held when volunteers can help with practical tasks.
  • Leaflets are available giving details, or see the 'What's On' boards in the car parks.

Walking, Cycling and Horseriding

  • There is a network of surfaced tracks around the country park. A bridge over the River Soar next to King Lear's Lake enables visitors to follow a variety of circular walks and rides.
  • The network of paths also links the northern and southern parts of Watermead and on into the countryside beyond the park. Most are open to all users, but some to walkers only.
  • For the more adventurous, the National Cycle Network passes through the park linking Dover and Inverness. This route will also link with other cycle paths in the county to enable other circular rides.
Fishing is popular at Watermead

Fishing

The fishing season runs from 1 July to 31 March inclusive. King Lear's Lake is popular for fishing and day tickets are available. Several of the other lakes are let to local fishing clubs. Charges are displayed on the notice board by the lake. Two platforms have been installed for fishermen with disabilities.

Sailboarding

Leicester Sailboarding Club sail on King Lear's Lake. Details of membership and day Sail Boarding arrangements can be obtained from the secretary on 0116 267 5589.

Sailing

Unfortunately, there are no facilities for day sailing in the park. John Merricks Lake at the northern end by the Grand Union Canal is, however, available for sailing by schools and organised youth groups. For details email: watermead@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 267 1944.
