The Future of Charnwood Forest
Between 2007 and 2011 the County Council led the development of options for the future of the area in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council, Natural England, GOEM and the National Forest.
A Charnwood Forest Landscape and Settlement Character Assessment was carried out in 2008 to provide baseline data to inform the development of plans and policies for the area. It also recommended the working boundary (PDF) for the Regional Park.
A series of three Topic Papers were prepared in 2010 to act as a basis for taking the Regional Park forward. Topic Paper 3 set out recommendations for a formal governance structure for the Regional Park which were subsequently approved by Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and Leicestershire County Council.
Planning policies for Charnwood Forest have been or are being developed through the County Council’s Minerals and Waste Development Framework and the Local Development Frameworks for Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and North West Leicestershire District Council.
In June 2007 the County Council organised a conference bringing together a wide range of interested parties to discuss options for the future of Charnwood Forest.
