Charnwood Forest Regional Park

Bradgate Park
The East Midlands Regional Plan recognised the need for measures to protect and enhance the particular character of Charnwood Forest through a Regional Park initiative.
Regional Parks are non-statutory partnership-led initiatives. Each Regional Park is unique and has its own specific objectives to provide varying combinations of environmental, social and economic benefits. The River Nene Regional Park in Northamptonshire is an example. Regional Parks do not provide land with any statutory protection and any proposed developments within them are subject to the usual planning procedures.
The County Council is leading the development of options for the future of the area in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council, Natural England, GOEM and the National Forest.
A Charnwood Forest Landscape and Settlement Character Assessment was carried out in 2008 to provide baseline data to inform the development of plans and policies for the area. It also recommends a working boundary (PDF) for the Regional Park.
A Vision Statement been prepared for the Regional Park.
Planning policies for Charnwood Forest have been or are being developed through the County Council’s Minerals and Waste Development Framework and the Local Development Frameworks for Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and North-West Leicestershire District Council.
