History of Oakthorpe Colliery Picnic Site
Oakthorpe Picnic Site sits on a former colliery site. The first record of mining dates from 1412 and suggests that it had been established for some time. Oakthorpe mine, known locally as “Thought It”, closed in 1990 and was subsequently purchased by Leicestershire County Council who developed the site for ecological and recreational purposes.
Initial works included native tree planting, path laying and providing hardstanding for cars, plus developing the picnic area.
Today, Oakthorpe boasts areas of naturally regenerated woodland and maturing native tree plots, along with open grassland which is managed for wild flowers.
