Teaching in Leicestershire

Teaching in Leicestershire - Headships in Leicestershire

Background Information

Leicestershire is a large Local Authority (LA). Its administrative headquarters are at County Hall, Glenfield, approximately 3 miles from Leicester City Centre.  The LA has 288 schools and colleges, ranging from small village Primaries with 50 or fewer pupils, to large Community Colleges with almost 2000 students. There are a variety of patterns of organisation:
  • Primary Schools - pupils age 4 to 10 years, 4 to 11 years and 5 to 11 years plus a few Infant and Junior Schools
  • High Schools - students age 10 to 14 years and 11 to 14 years
  • Upper Schools - students age 14 to 19 years and 11 to 19 years
  • There is 1 Nursery School and 3 Children’s Centres. More Children’s Centres are being developed across the LA.
In Leicestershire, our thinking and planning are both well advanced in addressing the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda. We are actively committed to the delivery of a seamless, consistent and effective solution to children’s education and social welfare needs in a complex and changing world.
A number of Primary Schools have attached Community Centres and some High Schools and most Upper Schools are designated as Community Colleges, providing programmes of Youth Work and Adult Education.
There are 6 Special Schools catering for children with Moderate or Severe Learning Difficulties. Additionally there are a number of Units, attached to Mainstream or Special Schools, which cater for children with Autism, Moderate Learning Difficulties, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment or Speech and Language Difficulties. There are 2 Special Menphys Nursery Units. There is also a Pupil Referral Unit which covers the county.  All Secondary Schools (High Schools and Upper Schools) are fully comprehensive.  Several Upper Schools have achieved Specialist Status, offering specialisms in the Arts, Sport or Technology.
