Working in Leicestershire Schools & Colleges

Non-Classroom Based Support Work in Leicestershire Schools and Colleges

A wide range of support staff do not contribute directly to teaching and learning, but undertake work that is essential to the smooth running and day to day operation of the school/college.  

Types of Roles

The following list is indicative of the types of positions that may be found in Leicestershire schools and colleges.

Pastoral Support Staff

Learning Mentor
Provides a complementary service to that given by existing teachers and pastoral staff addressing the needs of pupils/students who need help to overcome barriers to learning, both inside and outside the school/college, in order to achieve their full potential.
Pastoral Tutor
Provides proactive tutorial and pastoral support and works with others to help ensure that pupils/students flourish within the school/college environment, achieve high levels of attendance, behaviour and punctuality and attain their learning goals.

Technicians

ICT Technician
Promote and enable the maximum possible access to ICT resources to support learning, enabling all staff to use ICT with pupils/students, supporting the smooth running of the ICT network and assisting with the delivery of ICT across the curriculum.
Science Technician
Provides laboratory and general assistance to the science faculty, including maintaining and preparing equipment, preparing solutions, stock management, care of plants and livestock.  May assist teaching staff by providing support to students during practical lessons.

Office Staff

Administrative Assistant
Provides confidential, effective, efficient and flexible administrative support to the school/college, taking responsibility for specified tasks.  Level of responsibility and extent of supervision will vary subject to the grade of the post.
Bursar
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget, and undertakes the full range of financial duties within the school/college.  May also manage and monitor the work of other administrative support staff.
Business Manager
Ensures the provision of a comprehensive financial and administrative service to support the delivery of the school/college aims and objectives.

Premises Staff

Cleaning Staff
Ensure that a high level of cleanliness is maintained throughout the School/College on a daily basis.
Premises Officer
Contributes to the provision of high quality maintenance, security and cleanliness of the school/college buildings and grounds, to ensure that students have a comfortable, clean, safe and well maintained environment in which to learn and develop.

Lunchtime Staff

Midday Manager
Responsible for the management and development of supervisory assistants at schools/colleges over the lunch time period in order to ensure the health, safety, welfare and security of pupils/students.
Midday Supervisor
Takes responsibility for the health, safety and security of pupils/students during the school/college lunch break.
The above list is in no way exhaustive.  Each establishment determines the actual roles that they require in their staffing structure, according to their particular needs.   
A central list of all support staff roles is not held, though many support staff vacancies are advertised at www.leics.gov.uk/jobs as well as in the local press (e.g. Leicester Mercury, Loughborough Echo, Hinckley Times etc).

CPD Opportunities

This manual has been produced to provide information about qualifications and training programmes for school support staff.  Follow the link above to download the manual.
As well as formal qualifications, various short courses are offered in areas such as:
  • Behaviour and attendance management
  • LEAMIS systems training
  • Finance training
Details of short courses are provided by the service/department responsible for the delivery of the course, and are sent directly to schools and colleges over the duration of the academic year.
The website www.skills4schools.org.uk also gives information about training routes for a wide range of support roles in schools and colleges.
Some vocational qualifications and short courses are funded by the LA.  Details are sent to schools/colleges as and when funding is available.
