Literacy skills are important across the curriculum because:
- They unlock potential in students
- Students become better at reading, writing, speaking and listening
- Students become independent learners
- Self-esteem and exam performance improves
All schools will have provided staff INSET, using some of the modules in the cross-curricular training folder.
Your school will almost certainly have a Literacy Co-ordinator and a member of SMT with overall responsibility for literacy.
Literacy Progress Units (LPUs)
These have a strong cross-curricular element. Speak to your Head of English, who has reponsibility for delivering these to students who come into Y7 with L3 in English, ie below the L4 that is expected at that age. Their level of literacy skills might be making it difficult for them to access the curriculum.
