Writing Strategies

Clarify the task

  • Am I clear about the task?
  • Am I clear about the objective?
  • Find and record the information
  • Do I know where, who or what to go to for the information?
  • How will I record the information?
  • Do I have the right vocabulary?

Identify the key text features

  • Do I know the main language features of this text type?
  • How does this type of writing start/continue/end?

Identify the purpose

  • What is the purpose of this type of writing?

Identify the audience

  • Who is the intended reader for this text?

Plan

  • Have I planned what to write?
  • Which planning format will suit this task? (e.g. explosion chart/tree diagram/flow diagram/timeline/structure map)
  • Have I selected what to write?
  • Have I decided on the order?
  • Do I know how I will start and end?

Rehearse

  • Visualise the structure or shape of the piece before writing
  • Rehearse the next sentence to see if it makes sense before writing

Review

  • Have I re-read what I’ve written to check that it makes sense and conforms to objective, purpose, my plan and the text features?
  • Can I identify what needs improving, modifying or changing at text, sentence and word level?
  • Do I need more information?
  • Are the links between the different parts clear? (e.g. between sentences or paragraphs?)
  • Share Writing with a partner

Concentrate

  • Focus on writing without being distracted

Improve

  • How do I improve my writing and make changes?
  • Do I know and can I check my weaknesses?
  • Change the order (paragraph, sentence, word)
  • Vary words
  • Check spelling and punctuation
  • Consult my writing partner

Present

  • How is this text type normally presented in its final form?
