Advantages of Guided Reading

Pupils are supported in developing an understanding of the way language and organisation are matched to intentions by:
  • Activating their expectations of what they are about to read through prediction, and by consideration of specific words and phrases they will encounter
  • Articulating reading strategies they intend to use
  • A short period of independent reading followed by a joint task carried out in pairs
  • Focused questioning and discussion, designed to deepen understanding of textual features
  • An emphasis on pupils explaining and expanding responses orally
  • A short period of reflection and review, where pupils are asked to summarise the main purpose of the text
