Rugby World Cup 2007

Introduction
The following resources have been put together on the Rugby world cup.  The materials are aimed at years 9/10 but some of the resources could be adapted for use with other years.  As well as the usual numbers, dates, countries, nationalities etc the resources give scope for practising comparatives and superlatives.  The calendar for the matches can be downloaded from the website to practise the future tense.
NB: The team details were not available on the website at the time of this “going to print” but I have included activities which could be done on the players /teams
This can be accessed in French (and Spanish) by clicking on the appropriate tab at the top of the page.  There is a lot which can be done directly from the site, but if access is difficult many items can be copied and used later.  As there are lots of hyperlinks and interactive items some pages can’t be copied but selecting texts works well enough.
Resources on the CD:
  • Anagrammes of Rugby Countries - activity based on countries (138kb pdf)
  • Calendar - dates and times of matches(31kb pdf)
  • Connaissez vous les pays - flag/country/ language/nationality  worksheet – fill in the gaps(31kb pdf)
  • Connaissez vous votre equipe - Bio équipe Angleterre: Player biography cards: comparatives and superlatives needed here; these can be used to complete the “Connaissez-vous votre équipe?” tasks – this can be done in pairs/groups/individually.  They can also be used to prepare students to do presentations on favourite players and as a basis for writing more detailed biographies. The cards could be altered electronically to produce blank grids for them to research other teams. (51kb word)
  • Countries - The list of all the countries taking part is in WordArt so these could be enlarged and used for card activities or display.(33kb word)
  • Flags - (78kb pdf) and
  • Flags - (114kb word)These can be enlarged for display or OHT/PPT for starter activities. (If you are unsure of some of the flags look at the world map or go to the website as they are there next to the team/match in the schedule! The Ireland flag here is the one used for matches outside Ireland).
  • Grille bio rugby - (19kb pdf)
  • Le Lexique du Rugby - could be useful for getting students who like rugby to do reports on matches.(2097kb pdf)
  • Map of participating countries - (42kb pdf)
  • Maps showing stadia - (86kb pdf)

  • Poule de la Mort - reading text – lots of cognates so students can use their reading strategies to access the text.(32kb pdf)
  • Stades villes - Activity 1: Show one card on the screen – use Q/A to make sure students know the vocabulary in the headings.  Help them with pronunciation of the names of the cities and locations using the map on the PPT. Give out a set of cards to each pair and complete the grid (50kb word) in French/English as appropriate. Use a time limit to inject some pace into the activity. Check comprehension with a quick Q&A session – quel stade est le plus grand / petit etc.(288kb pdf)
