About the team and its services:

The team is responsible for the implementation of the National Secondary Improvement Strategy and the Leicestershire Secondary Improvement Strategy and for providing co-ordination.
General briefings and updates for headteachers and strategy managers are provided by the Strategy Managers.
(i) National Secondary Improvement Strategy
  • The Strategy aims to raise standards by strengthening teaching and learning.
Work in the subject strands will continue through 2006/7 and will be complemented by support for behaviour and attendance and six whole school initiatives.
  • For each of the subject strands support for management teams, departments and individual teachers is provided through:-
                   Core training for all schools
                   Additional training for identified schools.
                   Allocation of consultants to named schools.
                   Sharing of good practice.
                   LA and school partnership to monitor and evaluate the impact of the strategy.
  • The implementation of the Secondary Strategy is funded through Standards Fund and is a non-traded activity.
  • In addition to the implementation of the Secondary Strategy in line with DfES guidelines, the team will also be involved, directly or indirectly, in other areas of activity as set out in Priority 2 and 3 in Leicestershire’s Education Development Plan:-
    • Raising Attainment at Key Stage 3.
    • Raising Attainment at Key Stage 4.
    • Some activities relating to this may be traded.  Details of these will be published for schools separately.
(ii) Leicestershire Secondary Improvement Strategy
The team is responsible for implementing support under the Leicestershire Secondary Improvement Strategy and for supporting schools in implementing the recommendations of ‘Opportunity and Excellence’.
Specific foci include:
  • Raising attainment in the Design and Technology and Art group of subjects;
  • Raising attainment in Modern Foreign Languages;
  • Raising attainment in other subjects if weaknesses arise;
  • Raising the attainment of more able pupils/students and those with Special   Educational Needs;
  • Intensive work with Key Stage 4 schools/colleges identified as having the greatest achievement gap to bridge or having the lowest improvement rates;
  • Curriculum advice and support;
  • Support to schools is non-traded and funded through the Leicestershire Secondary Improvement Strategy.
Consultancy and training are also available addressing generic issues such as gender and attainment and management development.
