speaking and listening

Speaking and Listening

Speaking and Listening is a priority in many schools. Here are some ideas to encourage children’s participation. The ideas can be used as they are or adapted by teachers. There is a variety of formats to choose from, have a go and see which work best with your children. We would value any feedback or further ideas to share with teachers.
Speaking and Listening Materials
(93 kb PDF)
This is an overview of the Speaking and Listening materials that were published in November 2003. DCSF ref: 0623-2003G
Talk and Response Prompts
(54 kb PDF)
This is a resource to support pupils when they are asked to talk about or respond to a common theme. The talk prompts bullet point ideas for children to talk about. The response prompts bullet point ideas for ways in which children can respond by asking pertinent questions or providing thoughtful comments.
In their present format, the prompts are aimed at KS2 pupils. They are particularly focused on talk and response following a weekend.
KS1 Talk and Response Cards
(243 kb zip)
The KS1 Talk and Response cards are simply laid out with a key question and associated prompts:
  • Who am I? (based on story characters)
  • Where am I? (based on places)
  • What am I? (based on an object)
Topical Talk Cards
(42 kb PDF)
These cards are aimed towards KS2 but could be easily adapted for other age groups. The cards follow a similar format of introduction, further detail and a closing statement to help structure the children’s talk.
Speech Bubble Prompts
(94 kb PDF)
These cards focus on events or ideas directly related to first hand experience. They follow the same format including introduction, further detail and closing comments. The structure can be adapted for lots of other ideas.
Speaking Frame
(57 kb PDF)
The speaking frame follows a similar format to a writing frame. It helps children to formulate ideas before they say it. It is a particularly useful device for encouraging the use of conjunctions and connecting ideas.
Tell a Tale Cards
(28 kb PDF)
Tell a Tale cards can link to Grammar for Writing and the use of connectives in talk as a lead into writing.
What’s My Word?
(51 kb PDF)
The information at the top of this document explains how this activity could be used.
This is a particularly useful activity for developing use of precise vocabulary linked to cross-curricular work.
Pupil Interviews
(19 kb PDF)
These questions can be used as a monitoring tool to support the development of speaking and listening. We would advise that pupil interviews are carried out by two people, with one person as scribe and one person interviewing.
