Planning Guidance
The Primary Framework provides considerable support for planning.
- It promotes longer term planning of teaching sequences that build over time.
- It supports the integration in the maths curriculum of both using & applying and speaking & listening.
- It provides a range of ICT resources to support teaching and learning.
- It supports assessment for learning.
- It leaves room for flexibility and responding to the needs of your class.
Writing the Plans
The Primary Framework sets out the long term expectations for what should be taught.
You will need to think about two connected levels of planning.
- Medium term plans: The framework is divided into 5 blocks, with each block divided into 3 units. Example medium term plans are available on MathsWeb. Click here to see them.
- Short term plans: Each unit is 2 or 3 weeks long.
It is not necessary for teachers to draw up daily lesson plans. A weekly plan can give sufficient information. The lessons for the beginning of a unit will initially need to be planned in greater detail than the rest of the unit. Ongoing assessments can then be used to create more detailed plans for the rest of the unit.
