Explanation of changes to Educational Off-site Visits Courses
As you are aware, the Authority is moving towards a position where it will be strongly recommended that staff have undergone training before leading groups of young people on off-site activity. Given the large numbers of staff to train this will not be a quick process and it is anticipated that it will take a number of years to reach that point. The aim is not to discourage and stop off-site activity but to promote and encourage it.
To achieve this we have reorganised our INSET courses to provide an integrated training programme:
Group Leader Training – designed for all staff leading off-site activity. This is a mainly practical course including group management and risk assessment.
Course status – this is a nationally recognised course, attendance upon which will be strongly recommended at some point in the future.
Certificate of Residential Leadership – a mainly theoretical course, designed as a follow on to the Group Leader course with a focus on the residential aspects of off-site visits.
Course status – this is a locally recognised course, attendance upon which will be strongly recommended at some point in the future.
Snowsport Course Organiser – designed by Snowsport England for staff leading snowsport ventures with young people.
Course status – this is a nationally recognised course, attendance upon which is strongly recommended from the start of the 2010-11 season.
Educational Visits Co-ordinator – designed for staff in establishments with the responsibility for authorising off-site ventures.
Course status – this is a nationally recognised course, attendance upon which is compulsory for all establishments.
Holders of other Off-site Visits INSET awards
Many staff have already attended training courses and there is no intention or requirement that they will need to attend additional training. Staff who have already attended either EVC Training, Certificate of Residential Leadership, Risk Assessment for Off-site Visits or Day Visit Leader Training/Planning & Organising Day Visits will have already received the necessary training, and attendance on the Group Leader Training course will not be necessary. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award staff who have completed the Supervisor Course will also not be required to attend additional training.
