Delegation of Resources for Special Educational Needs to Mainstream Schools

SEN Delegation refers to the process by which mainstream schools are funded to support children with Statements of Special Educational Needs. Before delegation, schools received an individual amount of money according to the provision specified in each statement of Special Educational Needs. In 2002, the number of statemented children in mainstream schools was growing, and problems were becoming apparent.
SEN Delegation brought in a new approach to funding schools for this work. Rather than receiving amounts for each child with a statement, schools received one payment for all their work in this area. The amount for each school was calculated using a formula, ensuring that all schools were treated fairly and consistently. The new system brought some important advantages.
