Your Guide to Primary Education in Leicestershire

Section 3: Secondary Education

During the last year of your son/daughter’s primary education, preparation for transfer to their next stage of learning takes place.
Teachers will have organised visits and consultations for those pupils and parents transferring within the school ‘family’.
In September before the transfer, you will receive a letter identifying the secondary school serving your home address. You can request a place at this school. You can also tell your Local Authority if you would prefer a different school, in which case a place will be granted in the preferred school if there is room.

How are schools organised for older pupils?

All mainstream schools supported by the County Council cater for pupils of all abilities. Many schools and colleges provide Community Education which means that adults and younger children may use the facilities during the day or evening.
There are different ways of catering for the various age groups throughout the county.
  • most High schools cater for students from 11 to 14 years
  • some High schools cater for 10 to 14 year olds
  • at 14 students transfer to Upper schools which provide education up to and after the age of 16
  • a few schools cater for students from 11 to 18 years
  • students who wish to continue after 16 may continue in a school that provides Post 16 courses or they may transfer to a college in the Further Education sector.

Is there provision for boarding?

The Children and Young People’s Service supports two boarding establishments which are attached to two Leicestershire Schools:
  • Field House attached to Burleigh College, Loughborough
  • School House (boys only) attached to Ashby Grammar School
Details of availability of places and fees can be obtained by telephoning the Headteacher of the appropriate school/college.
