Student Loans

The Leicestershire Student Finance Service at County Hall, Glenfield is a partner with the Student Loans Company (SLC) in Glasgow and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in a scheme to administer financial help to students resident in Leicestershire or Rutland.

The Leicestershire Student Finance Service:

Provides information and guidance to students and their parents
Assesses a students eligibility and entitlement to support for their course of study on behalf of the Student Loan Company.

The Student Loan Company:

Provides the software to enable its customers (students, parents, spouse) to apply online
Provides the software in order that Local Authorites may deal with the assessment of a students entitlement
Makes the payment of the support that a student is entitled to
Deals with the recovery of any loan payments and grant overpayments
Provides the Customer Support Office to help students with their enquiries.
Issues correspondence necessary for the administration of all student loans

The Department for Education and Skills:

Formulates future policy
Gives guidance on the interpretation of the regulations agreed by Parliament.

How to apply

There are two ways of applying:

Paper application forms are available by using the request form.
Students and parents can also apply on line www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk.

There will be a new national Customer Service Office which you can telephone on 08456 077 577 for on-line applications and general enquiries and this is expected to be open Monday to Friday 8.00am to 8.00pm and Saturday and Sunday 9.00am to 5.30pm.

The system is fully protected by security procedures so that no-one else can access information about a student’s application but the student or parent themselves. For this reason the student and the parent will be allocated a unique Automated Response Technology (ART) ID (which will be printed on correspondence sent from the Customer Support Office).
