Meet the Good Food Gang
The healthy eating challenge in schools
'You can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.' An analogy that could be applied to children and healthy food!
The benefits of introducing healthy eating into schools are well documented (see the links section for further supporting web site evidence).
However, one of the key challenges facing schools is not only to provide school food policies and healthier school meals, but how to encourage children to choose and want to eat healthier food.
This is not always easy, as any parent or school staff member will know.
Good Food Gang make food fun!
To make sure Leicestershire's primary children are aware of and understand the benefits of a healthy balanced diet, the SFSS team launched a fun, educational campaign in Spring 2007 featuring 5 Good Food Gang Characters.
Each character represents one of the 5 basic food groups and children are told about his special qualities: e.g. 'Mighty Veg' - eat lots of fruit and veg to keep fit and fight germs". Children are encouraged to eat a variety of foods from all the main 4 food groups - but to keep 'Madame Cupcake' (fats and sugars) for occasional treats.
The campaign includes:
