What we do

The SFSS was set up to ensure school children in Leicestershire have access to a nutritionally balanced diet, to promote healthy development and growth.
We consult with anyone and everyone involved in school meals (including the most important people of all - the children themselves) to make sure that meals here in Leicestershire are the best they can possibly be.
We also act as an advisory resource and facilitator to schools, parents, governors, caterers and pupils. We aim to ensure that the needs of children are met in the most cost effective way, whilst maintaining quality and adding value wherever possible.
We understand that changing a child's opinion on the food they eat can be difficult, but with a little patience, perseverance and hard work from us all, guaranteeing the health of our children will be worth it!
Most importantly, where we have instigated changes, we are seeing a noticeable improvement in the behaviour and learning of pupils - and generally happier schools!
Our role - nationally
The SFSS School Food Development Advisor and 7 School Food Advisors regularly meet with catering operational staff, school heads and Governors, to deliver on the national objectives.
Our role - locally
As well as delivering on the national objectives, the SFSS aims to:
- encourage all school children in Leicestershire to have a nutritionally balanced diet in the school environment, in order to promote healthy development and growth.
- give the whole school community support advice and guidance in this respect.
We may do this by developing our own initiatives or by referencing national programmes such as '5-a-day', to ensure that the principals of a good diet are communicated to all stakeholders for the future health of the county's children.
SFSS are working hard to give our children the balanced nutrition and quality of food they need for healthy growth and development at school, laying the foundations for healthier later years.
