About the Parent Partnership Service

Do you feel that your child needs extra help at school?

Most children who need extra help can continue to learn with their friends at their own school with appropriate support.
Your child's teacher will be happy to talk to you if you have any concerns about your child.
If you would like additional support you are very welcome to contact the Parent Partnership Officer about the Parent Partnership Service.

The service encourages equal partnership between parents or carers and the people who are involved with special educational needs.

The Parent Partnership Service provides a range of flexible services including:

Support and information over the telephone
Keeping a register of Independent Parental Supporters
Providing parents with an Independent Parental Supporter on request
Training for Independent Parental Supporters
Written information for parents about special educational needs
Assistance for parent support groups
Maintenance of a list of local helpful addresses and groups
Providing interpreters
Signers for the hearing impaired
Arranging independent mediation between parents and the LEA or school

We have a list of outreach service times when you can have an informal discussion with a Parent Partnership Officer.

Are you the Parent of a child who has special educational needs?

Would you like the name of a trained volunteer who can help you with the Special Educational Needs Process?

An independent Parental Supporter can:

Listen to your concerns about your child's education
Support you at meetings concerning your child's special educational needs
Provide information and guidance on where to get further information about special educational needs
Explain the special educational needs process to you
Talk through the options available for your child
Help you to ensure that your child's views are heard
Sort out the paperwork with you
Help you to write your views

An Independent parental Supporter cannot:

Make decisions for you
Impose their personal views on you
Attend meetings in your absence
Help you with every family problem - their role is to help you with special educational needs issues
Write reports in your absence

Could you become an Independent Parental Supporter?

Are you the type of person who could befriend a family with a child who has special educational needs?

A free training course for Independent Parental Supporters is provided by Leicestershire Education Authority as part of the Parent Partnership Service. Volunteers attend sessions to increase their knowledge of the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice and increase their listening and mediation skills whilst having regard for equal opportunities.

Volunteers can attend regular meetings to keep them up to date with special educational needs issues.

Many volunteers are themselves parents who have a child with special educational needs.

Members of local support groups are very welcome to join our training course.
