Your Guide to Secondary Education in LeicestershireSection 1: Secondary EducationThe Law states that every school aged child must receive an education. The education received must be suitable to their age, ability and where appropriate to any special educational needs the children may have. This can be by either, “regular attendance at school” or to be educated “otherwise” (this is where some parents choose to educate their children at home known also as “Elective Home Education”). For children educated in school, the paragraphs below describe how children are admitted to secondary schools in Leicestershire.
During the last year of your child’s primary education, preparation for transfer to their next stage of learning takes place.
Teachers will have organised visits and consultations for those pupils and parents transferring within the school ‘family’.
In September 2009 you will receive a letter and application form naming the secondary school serving your home address. You can if you wish, apply for a place at this school only or apply for up to three schools of your preference. However, a school place will only be offered if the preferred school has places.
How are secondary schools organised for older pupils?All mainstream schools supported by the County Council cater for pupils of all abilities. There are different ways of catering for the various age groups throughout the county.
