Elective Home Education
|
Elective Home EducationWelcome to the pages offering advice to parents who are considering educating their child or children out of school.
The 1996 Education Act makes clear it is the responsibility of a child’s parents or carers to ensure that they receive a full time education suitable to their age, ability or aptitude and to any special educational needs they may have, by regular attendance at school or otherwise.
Most parents/carers choose to send their children to school to fulfil their responsibility, but attendance at school is not the compulsory way to provide education for a child. A small minority of people elect to educate their children out of the mainstream system. Leicestershire County Council respects the right of these parents/carers to educate their children at home.
Leicestershire County Council believes that:
What to do if you wish to educate your child/children out of schoolIf, after due consideration, you decide to withdraw your child/children from school, you need to write to the school’s head informing them of your decision and ask them to delete your child/children’s name from the register. (See the model letter in the Council’s Policy on Elective Home Education, section 8.0, Appendix 2.) The school will inform the Access and Welfare Service and the Home Education Officer will make arrangements to meet you.
Contact usIf you wish to contact the Access and Welfare service to discuss Elective Home Education please ring 0116 3055755 and ask for Helen Sadler, the Home Education Officer. In the first instance, you may speak to Alan Forman who also works with Elective Home Education.
