Education of Children in Care

Raising the attendance and attainment of Leicestershire Children in Care

Who are we?

The Education of Children in Care Service is a multi disciplinary service, including:
  • Primary & Secondary TeachersSpecialist Education Welfare Officers
  • Data Co-ordinator
  • Youth Workers
  • Mentoring Support (De Montfort University Students)
  • Educational Psychologist Support

What do we do?

  • A remit to raise the attainment and attendance of children in care.
  • Supporting schools and the Designated Teacher to ensure that children in care have the opportunity to achieve their educational potential.
  • Co-ordinate accurate data (a virtual school) of Leicestershire children.
  • Use this data to inform the work of the service
  • Direct teaching - including behaviour and attainment in a variety of settings including schools and childrens' homes
  • Training, including Teachers, Governors, Foster Carers, Social Workers
  • Coaching
  • PEP and ROA meetings
  • Transition Meetings
  • Accessing alternative provision
  • Direct intervention to support attendance
  • A range of initiatives, including youth work, to re-engage young people in the education process
  • Facilitate learning support for schools
  • Accessing additional support to raise attainment
  • Support transition between schools
  • Homework support
  • Letterbox club

How do we operate?

  • A member of staff responsible for an area of schools - co-ordinating a range of available support.
  • Staff will liaise closely with DT's and SW's in their area.
  • Accessible and able to respond quickly.
  • Staff have an in-depth knowledge of the needs of the children in care in their area.
  • Using data to effectively target support.
  • Regular liaison with Childrens Homes.
  • Support for foster carers.
  • Close liaison with other agencies including
    • Corporate Parenting
    • CAMIS
    • SENA
    • Connexions
    • Youth Service
    • Youth Offending
    • Social Workers
    • School Improvement
