Leicestershire’s Outcomes in 2008 Tests and Examinations
Outcomes in 2008 tests and examinations continue to show improvements and demonstrate that children and young people are well served by Leicestershire schools. Currently the results are provisional and will be validated during the coming months. However, the early indications are very positive and show good progress across the key stages.
The Foundation Stage Profile
- There has been an increase in achieving at 6 and above in each 13 aspects of learning for example, by 5% in Linking Sounds and Letters
- However in 10 out of 13 aspects the percentage achieving 8+ has fallen
- The gap between the median Foundation Stage Profile score and the average score of the bottom 20% of children has been narrowed again this year and now stands at 30.8%. In 2006 it was 36%.
Key Stage 1 (age 7)
- At level 2b and above pupils achieved 76% (75%, 2007) in reading, 65% (64%) in writing and 78% (78%) in Maths
- Leicestershire continues to perform well above national averages in reading, writing and mathematics at all levels of assessment
- Leicestershire is ranked in the top 15% of all Local Authorities at Level 2B+ in reading, writing and mathematics and is ranked third against its statistical neighbours (these are local authorities which have the same profile as Leicestershire).
Key Stage 2 (age 11)
- At level 4, the main benchmark, and above pupils achieved 84% (83%) in English, 80% (79%) in Maths and 89% (88%) in Science
- This places Leicestershire above national outcomes, in the top quarter of all Local Authorities, and ranked fourth amongst statistical neighbours
- These results may change as a number of schools have requested re-marks
- Leicestershire continues to perform better than the national outcomes at English, Maths and Science. English and Maths have increased by one percentage point
- Leicestershire compares favourably with its statistical neighbours and is in the top quartile of all LAs.
Key Stage 3 (age 14)
- At level 5 and above pupils achieved 81% (82%) in English, 84% (84%) in Maths and 81% (84%) in Science
- At higher levels (6 and 7) Leicestershire is significantly above national averages
- Currently it is not possible to give national and statistical neighbour rankings due to issues with the national testing regime
- These results have been affected by issues related to the national testing system which have been well documented over the summer. However, we are confident that Leicestershire’s position as being the highest performing Local Authority amongst our statistical neighbours across all measures at Key Stage 3 will be maintained
- The figures for Level 5 English and Science have dropped slightly and remain the same in Mathematics from 2007
- This can be attributed to border lining whereby in previous years pupils who were close to a Level 5 had their scripts remarked and many of them were then awarded a Level 5. This practice has now ceased and it is anticipated that nationally this will bring about a 2% fall in Key Stage 3 tests.
Key Stage 4 GCSE (age 16)
Pupils achieved;
5A* - C 64% (60.6%)
5A* - C inc English and Maths 52% (48.8%)
5A* - G 93% (93%)
1A* - G 98% (98%)
It is pleasing to note the improvement at 5A* - C which has risen by 3.2 percentage points which is the equivalent of approximately 250 pupils gaining this key measure
- From 2009 the measure of 5A* - C including English and Maths will be the target by which schools and Local Authorities will be judged
- Leicestershire has also made progress in this aspect in 2008 also increasing by 3 percentage points
- Currently it is not possible to give national and statistical neighbours rankings. Performance tables, published in January 2009, will enable this to happen
- It is likely that Leicestershire will be just above the national averages at 5A* - C and further above at 5A* - C including English and Maths.
