How to Set up an Award Group
Issues to consider
You may wish to set up your own award group…...If so there are many issues to think about.
- Who will help you run the group?
- Will they be voluntary or paid?
- Where will finances come from?
- What experience do you have?
- What qualifications will you need?
- Where will you meet?
- When will you meet?
- How will you recruit young people?
- Where can you get up to date information?
- Will you be covered by insurance?
Where can you get advice?
To begin with it is important to make contact with someone from your local operating authority. Staff based at County Hall are available to give advice and information over the telephone, alternatively we can put you in touch with a part time worker who co-ordinates the Award in your area.
It may be possible for them to meet up with you to give advice.
How to register
To operate an Award Group under the auspices of Leicestershire Operating Authority you must register using an R1 Form. This form will ask you to provide two referees who can comment on your work with young people and suitability to work with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
As this work will involve close contact with young people we will request that a police check is carried out on all new leaders, assistants and volunteers.
What training is available?
Leicestershire Operating Authority runs training courses throughout the year for volunteers and paid workers who contribute to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Often this training is completely free, If you are unsure about costs or eligibility you should contact Natalie Dixon at County Hall for clarification.
What resources are available?
When starting up the two items you will need to acquire are an Award Handbook and a Programmes File. It is important that you have a good understanding of the Award conditions and guidelines.
You can also contact the Award Administrator and ask to be put on the mailing list to receive regular newsletters and up to date information.
