Teaching Dance in Schools

Arts in Education works with pupils and schools in Music, Dance and Drama.
Music, dance and drama are all part of the National Curriculum and our advisory teachers have the experience to support staff in the early years, primary, secondary and special schools, and develop their skills in the performing arts.
The Curriculum Team has developed a large range of practical resources and website material for teachers in the performing arts. Members of the team have been instrumental in developing the National Curriculum and examination syllabi and are involved in examining and moderating at a national level.

Advisory teachers for dance in the curriculum support team can provide ...

Classroom curriculum support to promote effective teaching and learning by

  • working alongside teachers in their classrooms to develop skills and confidence in dance;
  • showing how to include all learners encompassing their differing learning styles, abilities, cultures and interests;
  • promoting creativity, oracy, and cross-curricular approaches;
  • working with teachers to devise schemes of work;
  • updating and networking good practice.

Staff development through

  • school workshops
  • tailor made packages
  • collaborative packages with other schools
  • central INSET
  • teacher networks

School based or local collaborative performance projects

  • Festivals of dance often developed from classroom curriculum work; these can include drama and singing too.
  • Dance Activate: school based workshops and regional dance classes for young people to offer dance experiences for all and to indentify more able pupils.

Performance opportunities

We offer  young people a range of performance opportunities at venues like De Montfort Hall, Knighton Fields Centre, Loughborough Town Hall and local community colleges. Look out for information coming into your school via post or intranet about our projects such as Kaleidoscope.
We offer school matinees and collaborate with other artists to introduce children to live dance performances.
Arts in Education is a trading service of the LA and has to meet its costs. The Standards Fund for Music and support from the LA enables the service to keep its costs down, but only represents around one fifth of the service's income.
