Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This page allows you to link to the standards site which deals with frequently asked questions regarding the Foundation Stage Profile.
Please email any questions or queries to smwilson@leics.gov.uk and we will post our answers on this page.
Q: Is there an A4 format of the initial ELP?
A: Yes there is. Go to the left-hand box and select Early Learning Profiles. This page will allow you to download an A4 format for initial and established settings.

Q: Do we pass ELPs on to parents or schools?
A: It is a requirement of grant to pass all ELPs on to schools. Best practice allows you to spend time with the next setting dicussing individual children. Attending local support FSSG will help this process of transition and communication, and will enable you to find out when the next setting would like the ELP information sent to them.

Q: A parent has asked to see the ELP - can we share it with them?
A: Parents are key contributors to the ELP. Best practice is to share information from the ELP throughout the year. The ELP should hold no surprises for parents and is a summary of how their child has achieved in the early stages of the Foundation Stage. Remember to focus on all the positive things children have achieved and ask parents to share with you things their child enjoys and can do at home.

Q: We pass the ELPs onto the main school that we feed into, but occasionally one of our children go on to another school. Should we send the ELPs onto them as we haven't got links with them, or can we pass them on via the parents?
A: ELPs need to be sent directly to schools. Attach a covering note explaining you would be happy to discuss the child further if the school wishes to.

Q: Is the Whole group summary sheet done for all children or just those leaving?
A: The whole group summary sheet is to be completed by initial settings when children leave at the end of the summer term. It is intended to be used as a reflective tool to see where children are succeeding or not. The information then needs to be used for you to think about future planning and provision offered to the children. If you need further support your Mentor Teacher will be happy to help you.

Q: Who is the CLLD audit for?
A:
Although the CLLD is not compulsory it is an extremely useful document for settings and schools to evaluate their practice and provision. When Mentor Teachers make their visits in 2007, they will collect information regarding the settings priority. This information can then be used to provide future training and workshops. Mentor teachers will also support settings with any issues that arise.
For schools, it is a useful document to enable you to reflect on your practice and provision and work as a school to address the issues and shares these with senior management.

Q: Will the outdoor publication on the website be published in colour?
A: As yet there is no intention to publish the document in colour. But it is useful for settings thinking about developing their outdoor use in all weathers with other practical tips included. The publication can be downloaded from the Outdoor Learning Publication page of this website.

Q: Where can I find out ideas for child initiated learning?
A:
The key to this question is to observe the children in your setting, respond to their interests and how they prefer to learn and provide them with opportunities to stimulate their interests.
Children need time to revisit their learning and sometimes will surprise you with what they choose to do with the materials available to them.
Tried and Tested Materials may help you as a starting point or give you fresh ideas to work with your children.

Q: Where can I find rhymes from other cultures?
A: This question is being asked a lot at the moment, because of settings responding to the CLLD audit. Any good bookshop will help you with this or alternatively the library will request books for you to borrow. The multicultural centre based at Quorn Hall will also lend books and artefacts (but book these early as they are popular). Contact Barbara on 01509 621579 or email blofthouse@leics.gov.uk . Look at the resource page of this website to see what is available. Liz Smith the inclusion officer is also happy to help and support settings. She can be contacted on 0116 2658042 or email ESmith@leics.gov.uk

Q: Where can I get a copy of the CLLD audit from?
A: Schools can download the audit from the standards website if their head teacher or subject coordinator had not got a copy. The literacy team assure me that every head teacher was given a copy when they attended a meeting and were sent one I they could not attend.

Q: Am I entitled to e learning credits?
A:
Early learning credits are allocated on the following basis:
all schools and funded 3 and 4 year olds ( where the setting meets the DfES minimum, pass inspection etc and have a PC windows 2000 or better) get a per pupil element base by dividing the remainder after the 287x£1000 by the eligible pupil numbers. I sometimes have to wait for EY headcount in May before funding goes out.
Settings do not bid but are allocated credits. Early Years Settings have had to return forms to say if they have a PC or not and the allocation has to be more than £50 to make it worthwhile. In 2006-7 we have given settings an allocation and they send a claim form in with copies of invoices and then we give them the money! If you need any more help please contact Adrienne by email ASainsbury@leics.gov.uk .
