Wash Day!

"This is the way we wash the socks, wash the socks…"
Resource - Mrs Lather's Laundry by Puffin (Happy Families)
Two children washing clothes

"Can you hold it while I peg it?"

           "Squeeze the water out then"
"Pooh. These socks smell like my dads"
             "I'm getting mine nice and clean"

"Hey, that's dripping on my foot"
Four children washing clothes
What the children did;
The children listened attentively to the story "Mrs Lather's Laundry" and were then encouraged to turn to it in their play and learning. Whilst some children eagerly wrote signs, others experienced at first hand the "trials and tribulations" of "hand washing". After being given a few simple instructions they were then given the freedom to chose clothes and materials to wash from the "laundry room".
What the adult did:
Careful observation ensured sensitive intervention about some of the issues raised
Learning outcome;
This activity sparked off some very interesting topics of discussion. "Boys don't wash clothes!", "Why do Simon's dad's socks smell?", "I like the smell of the washing powder". Although the children were left to voice their own opinions, some issues did need some careful adult interaction. The children began to understand about taking care of the learning environment, materials and property. They independently found, used and returned materials for themselves. It was wonderful to see them turning to each other for assistance in solving their problems.
