Extended Schools

Extended Schools are part of a long-term school improvement programme that offers a range of services and activities, often outside the school day and in school holidays, to meet the needs of children, young people, their families and the wider community.
At its heart is the recognition that children’s well-being and high educational standards go hand in hand and that these additional services contribute to improving children and young people’s skills, confidence, behaviour, health and achievement.
By 2010 the Government expects all schools to offer access to extended services including:
  • Access to childcare 8am-6pm, five days a week, all year round
  • A varied menu of activities beyond the school day including study support, arts, drama, music and sports activities
  • Swift and easy referral to health and family support services
  • Parenting support programmes including family learning
  • Community access, where possible to IT, sports and arts facilities plus adult learning programmes.
Extended Schools are schools that can offer children and families of 5-19 year olds access to services, information and support, including out of school activities and childcare from 8am to 6pm. This will support the consistent improvement for children throughout school within the delivery of the five outcomes for children as outlined in the Every Child Matters framework.
The Government is committed to the delivery of Extended Schools with the intention of all schools delivering extended services by 2010. Leicestershire County Council has already encouraged schools to join together to share resources and information to enable delivery and all Leicestershire Schools will be involved by March 2010.
