Baby Monitor and Electrical Cord Warning
There have been two deaths and one near death of a child in the US, who has managed to get hold of a Baby Monitor cord and strangle themselves using this. As a result, Health Canada are trying to raise awareness and asking parents to check the proximity of these items to a baby/child’s cot.
The purpose of the recall is to provide new warning labels to be affixed to the product and safe installation instructions for all models of Summer Infant video baby monitors with electrical cords. Health Canada would like to remind parents to place cribs away from windows, curtains, blind cords, lamps, electrical plugs and extension cords. The baby's head could become caught in the cords, resulting in strangulation.
It highlights the dangers of lengths of cords per se which are accessible to children when they are unsupervised, as clearly they are in their own bedrooms. A baby monitor by the very purpose of its design is marketed to be used in a child’s bedroom.
