Gypsy & Travellers

Index

The Gypsy Index has been compiled over a number of years and is regularly added to and updated.  It is an alphabetical index of references to Gypsies in church records, censuses and so on.  As well as Gypsies, it includes travellers, hawkers, sojourners; in fact anyone who is "passing through".  Their constant movement makes these people difficult to find and keep track of.  The Gypsy Index aims to help you track them down.
The more names in the Index, the more useful it will be so if you have any travelling ancestors who are not in there, we would like to hear about them.
Please click on the link below to access the Index.
There are also a lot of references where sadly no name is given, these are recorded separately and can be found by clicking on the link below.
Please Note: It is strongly advised that you look at the original document whether Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland or elsewhere.  This is because there is often additional information in those documents that could not be included in this Index.

Stopping Places Exhibition

This exhibition is a stopping place for work started by the Record Office for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and then developed further with Renaissance East Midlands funding to widen audiences. The aim was to begin creating a resource for Gypsy and Traveller family history research and recording.
